A premium small-batch distillery on Whiskey Row with one of the best cocktail bars in Louisville upstairs. Michter's combines historic charm with meticulous craftsmanship — and Bar 8314 alone is worth the visit.
Michter's Fort Nelson Distillery sits at the western end of Whiskey Row in a beautifully restored 19th-century building. The brand has a fascinating history — claiming roots back to 1753, making it one of America's oldest whiskey companies. Whether or not you buy the full lineage, the whiskey speaks for itself. Michter's small-batch approach and refusal to cut corners has earned them a devoted following among serious bourbon drinkers.
The real gem here is Bar 8314, the upstairs cocktail bar. Named after Michter's permit number, it's staffed by some of Louisville's best bartenders serving expertly crafted cocktails using Michter's spirits. The drinks are exceptional and the space is gorgeous — exposed brick, warm lighting, and a vibe that feels elevated without being pretentious. Even if you skip the tour, come here for a cocktail.
The production tour is solid — smaller scale than Old Forester or Angel's Envy, which gives it a more intimate feel. You'll learn about their commitment to traditional methods including barrel toasting before charring, and why they produce in smaller batches than most competitors.
Tour the production facility with a focus on Michter's meticulous approach to small-batch distilling. Includes a guided tasting. More intimate than the bigger Whiskey Row tours.
A seated tasting featuring their premium lineup including Michter's 10 Year and Toasted Barrel. Smaller groups and deeper exploration of the brand.
Michter's is moderately competitive — more so than Evan Williams but easier than Angel's Envy. Book 2–3 weeks ahead for standard tours. Closed Tuesday and Wednesday. Bar 8314 upstairs is walk-in and worth visiting even without a tour.
Small but well-curated gift shop. Standard Michter's bottles at MSRP. The Michter's Toasted Barrel Finish is the one to grab if in stock — it's allocated and hard to find at retail. Branded merchandise is high-quality and design-forward.
Michter's delivers a premium experience that matches its premium price point. The tour is more intimate than the bigger Whiskey Row stops, and the whiskey quality is outstanding. But the real reason to visit is Bar 8314 — it's one of the best cocktail experiences in Louisville and worth a trip even if you don't tour. Pair with Old Forester and Angel's Envy for a complete Whiskey Row day.
