What to Expect

Pensive Distilling is named after a racehorse — specifically Pensive, the Calumet Farm thoroughbred that won both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes in 1944. That racing heritage runs through everything here: the menu items are named after racehorses, the decor nods to the sport, and there's a clear pride in Kentucky history that feels genuine rather than decorative.

The distillery operates out of a historic building on Monmouth Street in downtown Newport that housed a speakeasy during Prohibition. They've leaned all the way into that history. To get into the tasting room, you need a password — it changes and is shared when you book your tour. It's a fun, immersive detail that sets the tone for the whole experience.

This is a small, craft-scale operation where the staff genuinely knows their product. The tasting experience is intimate and unhurried. If you're pairing it with a visit to New Riff (five minutes away), Pensive is a completely different energy — less production facility, more living history.

🔑 The Password

You'll receive the speakeasy password when you complete your booking. Don't lose it — the experience starts at the door.

Food & Dining

Pensive has a full on-site kitchen and it's genuinely well-reviewed — well beyond the usual distillery snack plate. The menu is American comfort food with every dish named after a racehorse. The kitchen has earned recognition from City Beat Magazine (Top 10 Best Restaurants in Northern KY, Most Over-the-Top Burger) and has a following independent of the distillery side of things.

Plan for a meal if you're visiting on a Friday or Saturday. Live music on Fridays makes for a strong evening out. The combination of the tasting experience and a dinner here is one of the better date-night options in the Northern KY bourbon corridor.

How to Book

Booking is easy. Tours are reserved online through Peek — a few days' notice is usually sufficient, even on weekends. Pensive is open Thursday through Sunday, closed Monday through Wednesday. The kitchen runs during all open hours.

Gift Shop

Pensive stocks their full spirit lineup for purchase — single barrel picks, the aged bourbons, and the Cognac Finish expression are the bottles worth considering. The 9-Year 111 Proof Single Barrel is their flagship and hard to find outside the distillery. Selection is curated rather than expansive, which is appropriate for a craft operation this size.

The Bottom Line

Pensive is a bright spot in Northern Kentucky bourbon — small, knowledgeable, and genuinely fun. The speakeasy setup isn't gimmicky; it fits the building's actual history and creates a tasting experience you won't get anywhere else on the trail. Add the well-reviewed kitchen and live music on Fridays, and this is a legitimate evening destination, not just a stamp on your passport.
