A beautifully revived historic distillery in Owensboro — one of the oldest in Kentucky, now producing award-winning bourbon in the Western region with an impressive campus and passionate guides.
Green River is a hidden gem in Owensboro, well off the beaten path from the main Louisville–Bardstown–Lexington corridor. Originally established in 1885, the distillery was revived and is producing bourbon again in a beautifully restored facility along the Ohio River.
The campus has an authentic, lived-in charm that contrasts with the slick corporate feel of some larger operations. The guides here are genuinely passionate — you'll get a more personal, less scripted experience than at the big-name distilleries. The production tour covers the full grain-to-glass process in a facility that balances historic character with modern equipment.
Owensboro itself is an underrated destination — the BBQ is world-class (this is the BBQ Capital of Kentucky), and the downtown riverfront area is pleasant for walking. If you're doing a longer bourbon trail trip and want to venture beyond the usual regions, Green River is worth the drive.
Full production tour through the historic facility covering mashing, fermentation, distillation, and aging. Ends with a guided tasting of their bourbon lineup. Guides are engaging and knowledgeable, and the smaller crowd size means you can ask questions freely.
A deeper, seated tasting focused on their full portfolio including limited releases. Good option if you've already done production tours elsewhere and want to focus on the bourbon itself.
Green River is one of the easiest bookings on the trail. Being in Owensboro means far fewer crowds than the main regions. Walk-ups are often possible, but booking online a few days ahead guarantees your preferred time.

The gift shop is well-stocked with Green River branded bottles and merchandise. Bottle prices are fair and you may find distillery-exclusive picks. The selection isn't as extensive as the major Louisville or Bardstown operations, but the staff is helpful and knowledgeable about their products.
Green River is the best reason to venture into Western Kentucky on your bourbon trail trip. The revived historic distillery, passionate guides, easy booking, and Owensboro's excellent BBQ scene make this a rewarding detour for anyone doing an extended trail trip. Not a must-hit for a 2–3 day trip, but excellent for a 4+ day adventure.
